Kids & Family

In late 2011, Bloomberg Businessweek named Blacksburg the best place in the United States to raise kids—and with ample reason.

Selected from 4,169 communities shortlisted for their median family income and low crime rate, and then assessed by way of each locality’s schools, economy, amenities, air quality, and ethnic diversity, the bustling college town rose to the top.

Blacksburg’s parents, caregivers, and educators are committed to helping our youth thrive. They volunteer in schools or teach in a dynamic homeschool network. They coach sports teams, lead Scouts troops, organize nature hikes, instruct music or art, and arrange science fairs.

Holiday parades in December and July, trick-or-treating downtown, spring and summer festivals, theater performances, outdoor concerts, and interactive literacy activities at the library regularly draw residents and visitors alike to the historic 16 Squares district to celebrate Blacksburg’s strong sense of community and kids-first culture.
