Blacksburg has seven public schools that are part of the Montgomery County Public School System; five elementary, one middle school and one high school. Each school is fully accredited based on the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Standards of Learning. In addition to the outstanding public schools, there are also several private schools and two institutions of higher education in the region.

Blacksburg is home to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, commonly known as Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech has 70 bachelor's degree programs, over 140 master's and doctoral degree programs, and over 31,000 full-time students. Part of what makes Blacksburg a special place is its strong Town Gown relationship with Virginia Tech.
New River Community College (NRCC) is a comprehensive community college located in Dublin, Virginia, just 25 minutes from Blacksburg. A satellite campus is also located in the New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg, less than 10 miles from Blacksburg. At NRCC you can prepare for the future with any of their various occupational programs or college transfer courses.
Less than 20 miles away from Blacksburg, Radford University provides outstanding academic programs to more than 9,000 students. Radford’s 105 undergraduate and graduate programs offer every student the opportunity to discover new talents, develop leadership skills and experience personal growth.
