Blacksburg, a Sustainable Town
Blacksburg is a very forward-thinking town when it comes to environmental sustainability, with that commitment strongly reflected in the Town’s Comprehensive Plan. The Town of Blacksburg is pleased to have developed strong partnerships with community groups and Virginia Tech to offer sustainability initiatives and resources that citizens and businesses actively participate in.
The Town has many long-standing community partnerships that have yielded many great sustainability initiatives over the years – from the annual Sustainability Week held each year in mid-September. to a downtown recycling plan, to the Caught Green Handed campaign, to a community battery recycling program, to an electronics recycling partnership, to rain barrel and composting workshops, to children’s environmental education programs, to the award-winning Solarize initiatives - to name just a few. Key partners in these efforts over the years have included Sustainable Blacksburg, the YMCA at Virginia Tech, the NRV Master Gardener Association, the Community Design Assistance Center, the New River Land Trust, SEEDs, Community Housing Partners, Habitat for Humanity, and the VT Office of Energy & Sustainability.
