Against a gorgeous mountain backdrop and centuries-old hardwoods, as much a part of the town’s history as its buildings and people, Blacksburg virtually hums with the legacies of its past. A walk along Main Street and through downtown’s original 16 blocks uncovers customs and culture at every turn, an appealing history that inspires the here and now.

The Alexander Black House serves as a community center offering thought-provoking art and history exhibitions, a variety of engaging community programs, special accommodations for meetings and special events and elegant gardens.

Built in 1774, Smithfield Plantation was the home of Revolutionary War patriot Col. William Preston and his wife. The Montgomery County Branch of Preservation Virginia restored, maintained, and opened the house to the public. Smithfield is a beautiful community gathering space and event venue, as well as a museum representing Col. Preston’s legacy.
